According to various clinical studies that have been done so far in Bulgaria, between 40-60% of our adult population suffers from chronic venous disease. The frequency in women is twice as high as in men. Although one of the main treatments is wearing graduated compression stockings, not everyone is aware of how to use them.

Compression stockings should be put on in the morning in a sitting or lying position (depending on one’s individual comfort) and removed only during rest and sleep. It is advisable to take a cool shower, as this promotes blood circulation and prevents blood stasis. It is also recommended that the feet be elevated for a few minutes before putting on the stockings. Leg elevation is known to aid venous drainage, increase venous return to the heart, and reduce ankle edema.

Roll the stocking up to the heel and place it on the foot, adjusting the pro-circulation insole until it is perfectly positioned on the foot. Slide the stocking smoothly to the knee or to the thigh depending on its length.

Position the stocking perfectly along the leg, smoothing out the creases without leaving it rolled or misplaced.

Care for and washing of medical compression stockings.

Wash the graduated compression stockings ONLY by hand (not in a washing machine), with lukewarm water up to 40⁰C and soap, swish and squeeze out the water.

Soak the stockings in soapy water, swish gently, rinse with lukewarm water and dry on a towel. Do not rub, twist, or wring to maintain compression. Leave on a terry towel to dry.Do not tumble dry, do not stretch, do not leave directly on a heating device and in strong direct sunlight, do not bleach or iron.

By following these instructions, you can maintain the compression of the stockings and, therefore, their therapeutic effect for up to 5-6 months, after which they must be replaced.
